ARVADA, Colo. (KDVR) -- Several laws take effect in Colorado in the New Year.One of those laws bans the use of plastic bags for purchases at retail stores and styrofoam from restaurant take-out orders. These new Colorado laws go into effect in 2024 A 12-year-old from Arvada said she has been advocating for this change since she was five. Madhvi Chittoor said the ban will help mitigate the impacts on climate change and the environment.“When I was 5 years old, I watched a CNN documentary called ‘Midway, a plastic island.’ It showed the garbage and plastics, they were all over the beaches and oceans," said Chittoor. "Everything decomposed except the plastic pieces. Also, the civilization where the plastic trash is coming from is very far away from Midway Island. A massive presence of police officers was seen surrounding Bayside Marketplace in downtown Miami on New Year’s Day after a big crowd of unruly juveniles created disturbing chaos at night. A video demonstrates a large group of teenagers setting off firecrackers on the road, as well as running, scattered all over and screaming.Miami Police have closed off the area as well as businesses in Bayside that have closed up their shops for the rest of Monday night. An alarming arrest was made, resulting in a South Florida volunteer firefighter spending New Year’s Day behind bars.On Monday evening, Vidal Lazo was seen walking out of Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. At first, he wasn’t willing to say much but then opened up later on to 7News. Multiple people were taken to the hospital Monday after flames tore through a building along Main Street in Falmouth, officials said. The fire broke out around 5 p.m. Monday afternoon and soon drew a massive emergency response near the corner of Main Street and Academy Lane.Later speaking to reporters, Falmouth Fire Chief Timothy Smith said at least two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries linked to this fire. One firefighter was also treated and later released. Several people were displaced from their homes after Smith said their apartments were damaged.“The personnel did a phenomenal job, especially since they had injuries when they first got here, as well as the amount of fire that they had,” Smith said. The victim has been identified after a man died from being stabbed early Saturday morning at a homeless shelter near Lake Shore Boulevard West and Bathurst Street.Police were called to the area just before 2:00 a.m. for reports of a stabbing. ROCHESTER, New York (AP) — Police were investigating after a fiery two-vehicle collision killed two people and injured five others in Rochester, New York, early on New Year's Day, officials said. The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. Monday as officers were directing traffic after a concert let out at the Kodak Center theater complex, police said in a statement. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A South Glens Falls man was arrested on drug charges following a traffic stop on Monday evening.
