After more than a year of historical inflation, grocery prices are staying relatively steady. Prices fell in March and April for the first time since September 2020 and have changed little since. In July, the cost of groceries inflated 0.3% over June prices.The drop earlier this spring was largely fueled by decreases in eggs—which had risen dramatically in price—as well as meats, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products.The overall cost of groceries in July remained up 3.6% from 2022 after historically high inflation in the past couple of years following a series of major social and economic events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, labor disruptions, and heightened consumer demand. Southern California is no stranger to smash-and-grab robberies, but an attempted theft in El Monte didn’t go as planned for one man, and his encounter with employees was all caught on video. According to the El Monte Police Department, the suspect entered Meza’s Jewelry, located at 10909 Main Street, around 2:20 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The man allegedly sprayed employees and customers with bear repellent spray and then proceeded to smash display cases and attempt to take merchandise. Things took a turn when the employees “engaged the suspect” according to El Monte police, and a struggle ensued. A man was shot in South L.A.’s Florence neighborhood early Sunday morning. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, units responded to the 100 block of West 71st Street at 1:07 a.m. When they arrived on scene, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, only described as a Hispanic man in his early 20s, was found in a vehicle and eventually pronounced deceased at the scene. No suspect information has been released. CONCORD — A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman who bailed from his moving car to escape, authorities said.Edgar Ivan Mendoza-Uribe, of Vallejo, was charged with kidnapping, sexual battery, assault with intent to commit another crime and evading police, all felonies. He was also charged with a misdemeanor count of committing a hit and run. His bail has been set at $1.2 million.The details behind Mendoza-Uribe were distressing to police as well as the alleged victim, who called 911 after being pulled into Mendoza-Uribe’s vehicle, but was unable to articulate exactly what was going on. The dispatcher was met with the sound of her screaming at Mendoza-Uribe to stop the attack, followed by sounds consistent with a fight, authorities said.Police were able to triangulate the location of the call to an area of Concord, where an officer noticed Mendoza-Uribe’s vehicle traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour.
