California definitely has its share of potential disasters – but one you might not normally think of involves volcanoes.Give Andy Calvert a few minutes, and maybe he can change that. Calvert is the scientist-in-charge at the California Volcano Observatory in Menlo Park and Moffett Field, a U.S. Geological Survey facility that studies local volcanoes. Eruptions around Mono Lake and Mammoth Mountain occurred relatively recently between 300 to 600 years ago, and Mount Shasta went off about 3,000 years ago and is very capable of a repeat.“All of these volcanoes will erupt again. Whether it’s in our lifetimes or not is uncertain,” says Calvert. “It’s not something all Californians need to worry about, but it is important enough to fund scientists to keep an ey...Rifle painted like Nerf gun seized by San Leandro PD

BOSTON (AP) — The heat that has gripped much of the nation has seeped into New England, forcing some schools to close or send kids home early on Friday, while the mayor of Boston declared a heat emergency with cooling centers opened around the city. In Lowell, Massachusetts, where none of the 28 schools have air conditioning, all classes remained closed on Friday “out of concern for the health and safety of staff and students,” as the temperature was expected to reach a high of 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius), with the humidity making it feel like 95 F (35 C).Other schools in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire were also closed or sent students home early — and curtailed after-school activities.Electric fans were delivered to schools to help keep teachers and students comfortable as temperatures approached 90 F on Thursday in parts of New England. La fuga de Haynes llevó a decenas de policías a registrar el vecindario de Foggy Bottom a pi...Stock market today: Wall Street edges higher, but it’s still heading for its first losing week in 3

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are drifting higher Friday, but not by enough to knock Wall Street off course for its first losing week in the last three. The S&P 500 was 0.3% higher in midday trading following three straight days of declines. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 90 points, or 0.3%, at 34,591, as of 11 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.1% higher.Stocks have been under pressure this week because of worries that a too-warm economy will push the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates high for longer. Traders have called off some bets for the Fed to cut interest rates next year, after reports showed the U.S. economy remains resilient despite much higher rates and struggles for other economies around the world.Such worries have pushed yields higher in the bond market, which hurts stock prices. But yields were easing on Friday, helping to give Wall Street a bit of relief. The yield on the 10-year Treasury dipped to 4.22% from 4.25% late Thursday.
