Opinion: Denver’s Board of Education ignored safety concerns before East High School shooting and should resign

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 01:33:16 GMT

In November of 2021, Austin Lyle was arrested and charged in juvenile court for possession of an AR-15-style weapon and high-capacity magazine. A month earlier Denver’s board of education finalized a substantial revision of their discipline matrix so that possession of a dangerous weapon outside school grounds no longer resulted in a mandatory expulsion.Fourteen months later these events would collide. In January 2023, still on probation and expelled from a neighboring school district, Lyle’s transfer to East High was approved by Denver Public Schools, contingent on a daily “pat-down” for weapons. On March 22nd Austin Lyle shot Jerald Mason and Eric Sinclair, school administrators assigned to pat him down. As police sirens echoed, East’s students and teachers — for the fourth time this school year – locked classroom doors, turned off lights, and waited. Outside, parents gathered by police barricades praying for the safety of their children.Considering DPS policy, prayer seems an...

The dangers of huffing paint, glue, solvent, aerosol gas, and other toxic substances seem to be more evident now. The autopsy of former singer Aaron Carter was released by the Associated Press and it states that his cause of death was accidental drowning due to having Alprazolam (the generic name for Xanax) and Difluoroethane (a commonly-abused substance found in some aerosol sprays) in his system. How dangerous is huffing paint — and other toxic substances?Huffing, sniffing, or inhaling substances for non-medical purposes is said to have both short-term and long-term effects on the body. When a person introduces chemicals through huffing, the effects are almost always fast — as the lungs easily absorb the chemicals, and subsequently, the bloodstream. Once the compounds pass through the blood-brain barrier, the person will instantly feel euphoria.Short-term effects of huffingHowever, the euphoric effects of the chemicals also easily wear off.
